Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on the 18th of July 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black father, and a white mother. She was raised primarily with her mom's family. She stated that the color of her skin was a reason she felt disregarded by her peers as an infant. Their family was struggling financially. They were constantly moving and moved sixteen times in order to help support their father's work. In spite of this, Russell mentioned how in her younger years "there always was a chance for innovation, to design something new."As an infant, Russell was already artistically inclined. At first, she desired to pursue a profession in ballet and later to be an artist. At eighteen, she took her first acting class, and eventually found her niche. She borrowed money from her job in order to purchase an automobile and travel to Los Angeles to audition. If her funds ran out, she would return home to work, until she made enough money to audition again. This went on for four years until she finally secured her first TV role on television.
